I don't know who first put 2 plus 2 together on EMF in haunted places. Ever since houses began to be wired for electricity in the late 1800's and electrical and battery powered appliances and devices were developed, people have reported ghosts manipulating them. In the mid 1800's, those who studied the paranormal (largely from the Spiritualism perspective) referred to spirits/ghosts as energy, but the context of the reference does not indicate they thought it was electromagnetic energy. In the 1930's into the 1970's, it was known among investigators that spirits/ghosts could manipulate electrical devices (the classic light bulb burning intensely bright, radio playing when not plugged in, etc). It was not until the early 1980's that ghost hunters started to ask if spirits/ghosts were a form of electromagnetic energy. In the early 1990's EMF detectors and negative ion detectors started to become standard equipment for investigations. In the mid 1990's thermal detectors for identifying cold spots generated by the EMF became standard. Who knows what the 2000's will bring us in the ways of new technology? I don't believe it was one single investigator, but several right about the same time who came up with the idea of looking for EMF in haunted places.
