As long as there has been well-conducted scientific research, ther have been hoaxers... even before PCs came around. But it's not all bad; at least it keeps us on our toes. Thankfully, it is still fairly easy to spot the deliberate hoaxes; computer imaging hasn't quite evolved yet to the state where it can be considered 100% realistic.
